The short version

ExpressVPN is a polished, premium service with more locations, more audits and more features than we offer. BoltVeil costs far less month to month, accepts crypto, adds residential proxies to the same account and lets you earn premium days for free.

What ExpressVPN does well

  • Lightway, its own open-source protocol, with post-quantum protection on by default, plus a post-quantum WireGuard option.
  • The TrustedServer platform: servers run from RAM and are wiped on every reboot.
  • Many independent audits, including KPMG no-logs assessments in 2022, 2023 and 2025.
  • A large network in 113 countries (214 locations) and apps for almost every device, including TVs and routers.

Worth knowing about ExpressVPN

  • Month-to-month plans start at $14.99, and long-plan prices apply to the first term only: Basic renews at $99.95 a year.
  • No crypto: ExpressVPN no longer accepts cryptocurrency payments.
  • No free plan; the free trial lasts 3 days and is only available through the mobile app stores.
  • No residential proxy traffic.

Frequently asked questions

Is BoltVeil cheaper than ExpressVPN?

Month to month and after renewal, yes. BoltVeil Plus is $4.99 a month against $14.99 for ExpressVPN Basic. ExpressVPN's 2-year Basic deal works out to $2.99 a month for the first 28 months, a little less than BoltVeil yearly at about $3.33, but it then renews at $99.95 a year, against $39.92 for BoltVeil Plus. See pricing.

Does ExpressVPN accept crypto?

Not any more. ExpressVPN says it no longer supports cryptocurrency payments. BoltVeil accepts USDT and other coins for prepaid 1, 3 or 12 month plans.

Does BoltVeil have Lightway?

No. Lightway is ExpressVPN's own protocol. BoltVeil uses WireGuard, which is also fast and modern, and OpenVPN, including a firewall mode over TCP. Our protocol guide explains the differences.

Is BoltVeil as audited as ExpressVPN?

No. ExpressVPN has one of the longest audit records among VPNs. BoltVeil has not had an independent audit yet; our no-logs policy lists exactly what we store, and our VPN network is operated by an infrastructure partner under contract.

Which one is better for streaming?

We do not promise that any streaming service works through BoltVeil. Streaming services actively block VPN addresses, so results change over time with any provider. If streaming is your main reason for a VPN, test it during the money-back period, whichever provider you choose.
